Subtitled The Shanti Mantras, the overture sets the ancient Sanskrit peace chants for chorus and orchestra, sung phonetically so the sound of the syllables carries the meaning. Premiered April 16, 2011, at Barry University, Miami Shores, Florida.
Dedicated to Joseph Haydn. The second movement is an aria setting Hermann Hesse’s 1902 poem Über die Felder (“Across the Fields”).
Music composed from a gene. A computer program developed at Barry University translated the LysA gene of E. coli into a chord progression, assigning each amino acid a triad by how often it appears, so the most common amino acid became the tonic. That harmonic backbone became this fantasy for piano and orchestra.
